XP Service Pack 3: Addressing Multiple XP Networking Problems

September 30th, 2011 No comments

One of the more welcomed advances with the Windows operating system XP was the enhanced ability to link computers up to a network. However, with all new advances came trouble and when the troubles began to mount up a service pack, like XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), was released to address the trouble.

What Is the XP Service Pack 3?

The XP Service Pack 3 is a special download that was put out by Microsoft in order to defuse multiple problems that were being found with the XP operating system. XP Service Pack 3 was the last service pack in a series of three that was released by Microsoft. Though it was not necessary to install the other two previous service packs, Microsoft does suggest at least installing XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) first. This allows for best results.

What Caused the Need for XP Service Pack 3?

As with any new program there are bound to be glitches. With Microsoft, they always want to ensure that their products are running as smoothly as possible. A lot of this can be handles with periodic updates, but when there is a lot that needs to be addressed a service pack represented an easier and more efficient way to go about this.

Installing XP Service Pack 3

If your computer is set to receive Windows Updates automatically, you may have already had XP Service Pack 3 downloaded. However, if your computer is running the XP operating system and it does not have the XP Service Pack 3 installed or your computer is on a network without it being installed, then you can still download the XP Service Pack 3 manually.

Solution 1: Manual Installation of XP Service Pack 3 for Individuals

Steps:

  1. Turn on your computer.
  2. Go to Microsoft Updates page.
  3. On the right hand side of the page, you will see current status of your Automatic Updates.
  4. Ensure that the Automatic Updates is enabled.
  5. If it isn’t, click OK in the Automatic Updates window.
  6. Run an update.
    1. Click the Start Button on your desktop.
    2. Click ‘All Programs’.
    3. Click ‘Windows Update’.
    4. You will see a wizard with on screen instructions to follow.
    5. Click ‘Finish’ when prompted.
  7. Restart your computer.

Solution 2: Manual Installation of XP Service Pack 3 for IT Professionals.

  1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24.
  2. Click the ‘Download’ button.
  3. Click Open or Run This Program Immediately.
  4. Follow Prompts.

These steps will help you ensure that the XP Service Pack 3 is properly installed on your computer or all the computers on your network. Good luck!

Winsock Fix: Getting Back to the Network

September 29th, 2011 No comments

Winsock is commonly used by those who access a network with their computers. When there is the need for a Winsock fix, it is typically because the user can’t access the internet or the network properly.

What is a Winsock Fix?

Winsock is an acronym that many years of computing got from ‘Windows Sockets API.’ Winsock is how Windows networking software accesses services on the network, so it makes sense that a Winsock fix is needed whenever there is a Winsock problem. There are a number of problems that can arise as a result of a Winsock error and these problems are usually made known when a pop up error message comes up.

What Causes a Winsock Fix to be Needed?

A Winsock fix will usually be needed as the errors will not allow a user to do even the most basic of tasks on their computer or their computer’s network. For example, you might not be able to log onto the internet or you might get booted off as soon as you get on. These problems can arise as a result of malware infections on your computer or they can be due to corrupt files on your computer’s registry.

How to Conduct a Winsock Fix

As there are many Winsock errors that can arise, there will therefore be multiple solutions for your Winsock fix. However, there are three common fixes that may help with the majority of the Winsock problems you might be experiencing.

  5. Follow the on screen prompts.
  6. Restart your computer once the update is completed.

Solution 2: Malware Scan

Steps:

  1. Turn your computer on.
  2. Locate the icon for your anti-malware software on your desktop or lower toolbar.
  3. Double click the icon.
  4. Run a ‘Complete System’ malware scan.
  5. Delete any malware found.
  6. Restart your computer to allow changes to take effect.

Solution 3: Do a System Restore Back

Steps:

  1. Start your computer (Use F8 to initiate Safe Mode if you want to play it ultra safe).
  2. Click the Start Button.
  3. Click ‘Control Panel’.
  4. Click ‘System’
  5. Go to ‘System Protection’ tab.
  6. Click ‘System Restore’
  7. Click ‘Apply’

Windows JIT Debugger: ‘Just-In-Time’ for Catching Errors

September 29th, 2011 No comments

Anyone who uses Visual Studio is likely aware of the Windows JIT Debugger program. While Visual Studio has a debugger of its own, the Windows JIT Debugger can kick in when other outside applications are experiencing problems.

What is Windows JIT Debugger?

The JIT part of Windows JIT Debugger is an acronym for Just-In-Time. So, as the name would suggest, the program will debug a problems on a ‘just-in-time basis. This is typically seen when a pop up message is launched by the Windows JIT Debugger allowing you to either let a fatal error occur or check into the problem. However, this application can sometimes fail and all sorts of problems can arise as a result.

What Causes Windows JIT Debugger to Fail?

If your computer is infected with a virus of some sort it may be disallowing your Windows JIT Debugger to run properly. Another common cause of this type of error is when a file or files on your computer’s registry have become corrupt. However, the most likely cause of a Windows JIT Debugger problem is the fact that another program, like Visual Studio, has a built in debugger and that debugger is competing with the Windows JIT Debugger causing all sorts of problems.

Fixing Windows JIT Debugger problems

There are two simple solutions that you can try when you are attempting to tackle problems with your Windows JIT Debugger. The one that works best or you will obviously depend on the actual cause of your troubles.

Solution 1: Make Windows JIT Debugger Default Debugger

This step may require you to login as the administrator so you can change the registry key. This will all depend on the Windows operating system you are running.

Steps:

  1. Turn your computer on.
  2. Click the Start Button.
  3. Click on Tools.
  4. Click on Options.
  5. Located the Options Dialog box.
  6. Select your Debugging Folder.
  7. Highlight and select JIT Debugger.
  8. Either clean or select programs labeled Script, Managed, and/or Native.
  9. Click OK.

10. Restart your computer to allow change to take hold.

Solution 2: Complete a Virus Scan

Steps:

  1. Turn your computer on.
  2. Find the anti-virus icon on your desktop or on your lower tool bar.
  3. Double click the anti-virus icon.
  4. Find scanning options.
  5. Select the ‘Full System Scan’ option.
  6. Run the scan.
  7. Delete any viruses that are found.
  8. Restart your computer to allow changes to take effect.

Hopefully this will help you get your Windows JIT Debugger running the right way again. Good luck!

Windows Diagnostics: Built in Problem Solver for Windows Vista and Windows 7

September 29th, 2011 No comments

Windows Diagnostics is a tool that Microsoft provides in both the Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. This utility allows users to diagnose and solve many computer problems on their own. The tool is meant to be easy to use and implement.

What is Windows Diagnostics?

Windows Diagnostics is something that Microsoft added to its latest operating systems in order to help combat many of the common memory problems that arise as a result of computer use. The tool is very handy to have and can be initiated manually if you think that there might be a problem with the memory of your computer as it may be acting in an erratic way. While the Windows Memory Diagnostic portion of the Windows Diagnostic will usually kick on automatically if something is amiss, you can still opt to turn it on manually at any time.

What Causes the Need for Windows Diagnostics Help?

Really anything that might be going wrong with your computer’s memory can be checked for problems using Windows Diagnostics. There are many problems that can plague your computer and when these problems get left alone for too long they tend to get worse. The result will be annoying and frequent error messages that pop up and all sorts of problems completing even the most basic tasks. While the Windows Diagnostics will not always solve all the problems that arise on your computer, it is a great place to start looking when something does go wrong.

Using Windows Diagnostics

Again, Windows Diagnostics may not fix all your computer problems, but it is a tool that is certainly worth exploring should you feel the need to do so. If your problem does stem from a memory issue, as many computer problems do, Windows Diagnostics will likely catch it.

Solution

Steps:

  1. Start your computer (start in Safe Mode by pressing F8 during boot up if you want to be ultra cautious).
  2. Click the Start Button.
  3. In the search box you will see type in ‘mdsched.exe’.
  4. Press the ‘Enter’ key on your keyboard.
  5. Review the box that will appear.
  6. Select whether you wish to run the test now or on the next restart.
  7. If next restart option is used, the tool will run the next time your computer gets booted up.
  8. If an issue with the memory is found, you will be alerted by Windows Diagnostics.
  9. Check for solutions and execute.

10. Restart your computer to allow any changes to take effect.

This should help you initiate Windows Diagnostics so you can quickly and easily check your computer’s memory for any problems. Good luck!
