September 9th, 2011 Posted in .Net Framework Update, Installer Error, Windows Defender, Windows Update Comments Off on How to Fix Windows Defender on Your Computer

What Does It Mean to Fix Windows Defender?

Windows Defender is a software program for Windows Vista that protects your computer from viruses and malicious programs. When the program won’t start or gives you issues, you may need to take steps to fix the Windows Defender program to ensure you continue to protect your computer.

What Causes Windows Defender Errors?

For various reasons, files can become corrupt and stop working on any computer. When the Windows Defender program/file becomes corrupt for any reason, then it will cause issues and no longer run properly on your computer. When the program isn’t running correctly, or at all, it isn’t protecting your computer as it was installed to do.

How to Fix Windows Defender Errors

There are couple options to Fix Window Defender errors listed below, including a System Restore or System File Checker.

Solution 1: System Restore.

  1. Restart or Start your computer in Safe Mode (press F8 before the startup screen has a chance to appear).
  2. Click the Start button.
  3. Click Accessories.
  4. Click System Tools.
  5. Select System Restore.
  6. Select Choose a Different Restore Point.
  7. Click Next.
  8. A list of options for restore points will appear. Select the last time and date that the Windows Defender program worked properly.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Confirm the information that appears under the Confirm Your Restore Point screen is correct.
  11. Click Finish.
  12. After the restore is finished, try opening Windows Defender to verify its working.

Solution 2: Check for a Damaged File by running System File Checker.

Please note: If using this solution, System File Checker will not impact your personal programs or files, but it will restore Windows Vista’s settings back to its factory default state.

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click All Programs.
  3. Click Accessories.
  4. Select Run.
  5. Enter %systemroot%.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Select the System 32 file folder.
  8. Look through the folders and files for cmd.exe.
  9. Right click on cmd.exe.
  10. Choose Run as an administrator.
  11. Select Continue if and when a User Account Control box appears.
  12. Enter sfc /scannow.
  13. Hit the Enter button. (If System File Checker finds any errors for Windows Defender, it will try to fix them.)
  14. Give the system time to detect and clear any errors it finds.
  15. Open Windows Defender to see if it’s now working.

One of these solutions should resolve any issues to help you fix Windows Defender on your Windows Vista operating system for your computer. Good luck, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance in any way!
