How to Stop Pop Ups on Your Computer

What are Pop Ups, and why do you need to know How to Stop Pop Ups?

Pop Ups on your computer happen when a small web browser window shows up over the website you’re visiting. Pop Ups can slow down your computer and can cause issues while trying to surf the web. They can sometimes carry viruses and can be challenging to close down, and for many, they’re annoying and interrupt the web browsing experience.

 

What Causes Pop Ups on your computer?

Pop ups are often created by advertisers and open the moment you visit certain websites, and you have to manually close them down.

 

How to Stop Pop Ups on your computer

There is one primary way to stop pop ups from appearing in Internet Explorer, but you can also choose to allow some pop ups when needed.

 

Solution 1: Turn on Pop Up Blocker

Steps:

  1. If it’s open, close out of Internet Explorer.
  2. Open or reopen your Internet Explorer.
  3. Click on the Tools tab.
  4. Select Pop-up Blocker.
  5. Click on Turn On Pop-up Blocker.
  6. Restart Internet Explorer.
  7. Repeat steps 1 through 3 and select Turn Off Pop-up Blocker to do the opposite and turn off the Pop-up Blocker.

 

Solution 2: Allow pop ups from certain sites, but stop them from most sites.

Steps:

  1. If it’s open, close out of Internet Explorer.
  2. Open or reopen your Internet Explorer.
  3. Click on the Tools tab.
  4. Select Pop-up Blocker.
  5. Click on Turn On Pop-up Blocker.
  6. Click on the Tools tab again.
  7. Select Pop-up Blocker Settings.
  8. Type in the address of the sites that you want to allow pop ups from in the Address of website to allow: box.
  9. Click Add.
  10. Restart Internet Explorer.
  11. To reverse this, repeat steps 1 through 6, highlight the site you want to stop pop-ups from in the Allowed sites: box, and click Remove.

 

Solution 3: Remove sites from your safe zone.

Steps:

  1. If it’s open, close out of Internet Explorer.
  2. Open or reopen your Internet Explorer.
  3. Click on the Tools tab.
  4. Select Pop-up Blocker.
  5. Select Pop-up Blocker Settings.
  6. If you want to remove all of the sites listed in the Address sites: box, click Remove all. If not, highlight only the web address or addresses of the sites that you want to stop pop ups from in the Address sites: box.
  7. Click Remove.
  8. Restart Internet Explorer.
